On 4 September 2026, our colleague Éva Forintos gave a lecture in English entitled ‘Terra Australis Incognita’ at the László Lovassy Grammar School in Veszprém, in a class specialised in the English language taught by Ms Andrea György-Gyarmathy.
The presentation, “Terra Australis Incognita” gave a broad introduction to Australia’s geography, history, culture, institutions, wildlife, Indigenous heritage, and language. It covered national symbols and political institutions, the early European exploration and settlement of Australia, and distinctive natural features and animals. It also gave significant attention to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, their traditions and relationship with the land. A later section focused on Australian English, including pronunciation, vocabulary, informal expressions and the influence of Aboriginal languages on Australian English.
The main aim of the presentation was therefore to provide a cultural and linguistic overview of Australia. It familiarized the audience not only with iconic places and national characteristics, but also with the historical and Indigenous dimensions of Australian society and with the distinctive features of Australian English. We would like to thank Lovassy László Secondary School and Andrea György-Gyarmathy for the invitation, and the students for their interest and enthusiastic participation. We are also happy to bring similar English-language cultural and linguistic programmes to other secondary schools and look forward to meeting students across the region in their own classrooms.

Nyolcan Zadarban – Contemporary Horizons in English Studies
Nagy öröm számunkra, hogy az Angol–Amerikai Intézetet nyolc oktatónk képviselte a Contemporary Horizons in English Studies (CHES) nemzetközi konferencián, amelyet szeptember 18–19-én rendeztek meg a Zadari Egyetemen, Horvátországban. A konferencia különleges alkalom volt: a Zadari Egyetem Angol Tanszékének 70. évfordulóját is ünnepelte.

Eight Strong in Zadar – Contemporary Horizons in English Studies
We were delighted to have eight members of the English and American Studies Institute representing us at the international conference Contemporary Horizons in English Studies (CHES), held on 18–19 September at the University of Zadar, Croatia. The conference was also a special celebration of the 70th anniversary of the University of Zadar’s Department of English Studies.
The programme showcased the remarkable diversity of contemporary English Studies, bringing together research in literature and culture, linguistics and language policy, digital culture, media, language teaching, and many other fields.
Our colleagues contributed to this diversity with research ranging from transmedia storytelling and authorship to Hungarian diasporic language use, U.S. language policy, Hungarian-English code-switching, and ethical and literary questions in the fiction of Alice Munro.
Many thanks to the organisers for an inspiring conference, stimulating discussions, and wonderful hospitality. It was especially rewarding to represent the University of Pannonia and our Institute with such a strong team in an international academic community.

A beszélgetés vendégei voltak:

The discussion explored the successive waves of Hungarian emigration, the historical and personal reasons for leaving home, the challenges and opportunities of building a new life in the United States, return migration, the preservation of cultural identity, and the family and community ties that continue to connect Hungarian Americans with Hungary across generations.
Our guests were:
László Gábor Katona, education expert and American Studies scholar (University of Pannonia),
Éva Mathey, historian and American Studies scholar (University of Debrecen),
Benedek Tóth, media historian (University of Pannonia).
